Singapore, the name comes from the Sanskrit words "Singa"& Pura",  meaning"Lion"& "City". Hence Singapura. This happened in the 14th century. Singapore was then known as Temasek ( Sea Town ). Legend has it that a Prince from Palembang named Sang Nila Utama landed in Temasek. He saw a strange beast which he mistook for a lion. He promptly renamed this place Singa Pura.

When Sir Stamford Raffles landed in 1819 , Singapura had only a few inhabitants and because of its fine natural harbour, sheltered anchorage and strategic position for trade, he made Singapura the gateway to the East.

In 1965 Singapore became an Independent Republic. Thanks to MM Lee Kuan Yew, the father of modern Singapore and his cabinet of ministers, Singapore developed from a third world country to a first world city state.
